Osamu Dezaki
Some might say that Osamu Dezaki is perhaps the greatest anime director of all time—and we might be inclined to agree. Over the course of his career, Dezaki pioneered many of the bread-and-butter animation techniques that the industry now takes for granted. From the postcard memory, to the rapid repeating triple cut, and so much more, the director’s stamp has been firmly placed on the medium as whole.
Starting with titles like Tomorrow’s Joe and Aim for the Ace, viewers can see how Dezaki developed these techniques while he navigated tight budgets and even tighter deadlines. It can even be seen when he tags in to direct the second half of Lady Oscar: The Rose of Versailles. But when money seemingly isn’t a restriction, Dezaki’s style explodes in works such as Dear Brother and the Black Jack OVA series. It’s difficult to think of a talent with such an unmistakable and influential style. Truely, no one could do it like Osamu Dezaki.
