Mamoru Oshii
Known throughout the world for his contemplative meditations on geopolitics, advancing technology, and spirituality in the digital age, Mamoru Oshii has long cemented himself as a visionary director. But before he untangled these disparate themes with works such as Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor 2, the director honed a razor-sharp talent for comedy and satire on Urusei Yatsura (1981). Oshii’s time directing the tiger-striped fan-favorite eventually allowed him to stretch his legs into projects that scratched his great ambitions—titles like Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer, Angel’s Egg, and Dallos.
Following those projects, Oshii and his collaborators at HEADGEAR embarked on a new journey—The Mobile Police Patlabor. The OVA series and movies that followed allowed him to flex his comedic muscles while diving deeper into political commentary. These elements bled into Ghost in the Shell, while affording the director the opportunity to explore more existential themes—a key element of his live-action film work in the decades since then. In recent years Oshii has lent his directorial talents to Lupin the Third Part 6, The Fire Hunter, and his comedic return, Vlad Love.
