The tip of the Khara and Gainax lances, Hideaki Anno’s keen attention to detail and intense love of electrical infrastructure have become just a few of the lauded director’s many calling cards. After trying his hand at becoming Ultraman in his college days, Anno cultivated a prestigious reputation throughout the early 80s. During this time, he worked as an animator on classics such as Super Dimension Fortress Macross, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and Megazone 23 before making his directorial debut with 1988’s Aim for the Top! Gunbuster. But above all else, Anno is best known for his wildly celebrated magnum opus, Neon Genesis Evangelion. Following Evangelion’s recent conclusion, he tried his hand at becoming Ultraman again and succeeded with a string of Tokusatsu reimaginings such as Shin Ultraman, Shin Kamen Rider, and Shin Godzilla.
