If you know anything about anime, then this two-time Academy Award winner should need no introduction. But just to be safe, this legendary director kicked off his career by rising through the ranks of Toei Animation in the 1960s, alongside his lifelong collaborator, Isao Takahata. During this time, Miyazaki lended his blossoming animation talents to projects big and small—from Sally the Witch to Horus, Prince of the Sun. He made his television directorial debut with the highly influential Future Boy Conan in 1978 before making a big screen splash in 1979’s Lupin The Third: The Castle of Caligostro. This intense momentum carried Miyazaki into the production of 1984’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and formation of Studio Ghibli in 1985, where he’s directed hit after beloved hit to this very day.
