From Kite to Virgin Punk, Yasuomi Umetsu’s career has been defined by his grindhouse cult classics—each title oozing with blood, lust, and high-impact action. But before all that, the director initially popped up on the industry’s radar for his radical redesigns of the Megazone 23 cast in Part II. However, he made an even bigger splash with his directorial debut, Robot Carnival’s Presence segment.

Through the late 80s and 90s, Umetsu regularly contributed to adult-focused OVA such as Angel Cop, Shin Hurricane Polymar, and Casshan: Robot Hunter. It wasn’t until 1998 that he first flew a Kite. In recent years, Umetsu has directed numerous opening credits sequences along with 2014’s Wizard Barristers. He’s currently working away at his Virgin Punk film series.
