While Mobile Suit Gundam may have introduced audiences to the real robot genre, Ryousuke Takahashi firmly cemented its image with Armored Trooper VOTOMS, Fang of the Sun Dougram, and Blue Comet SPT Layzner. Takahashi kicked off his career at Mushi Production in the 60s, but eventually arrived at Sunrise in the early 80s. His collaborations with the house that Gundam built explore the often excruciatingly slow burn of war, and how it affects those trapped in the cross fire.
The director has remained dedicated to drinking the bitter coffee of Uoodo over the years, often returning to VOTOMS with new war stories to tell. However, Takahashi has recently stepped out his Scopedog to direct 2021’s Muteking the Dancing Hero and the ongoing adaptation of Katsuhisa Minami’s The Fable.
