Masao Maruyama
This might sound like an exaggeration when speaking of other creators, but Masao Maruyama has literally been in the room since the dawn of anime. Over the course of his 60+ year career, this legendary producer lived through the rise and fall of Mushi Productions in the 1960s, established MADHOUSE in the early 1970s, and started all over again at MAPPA in the early 2010s.
Even if he wasn’t directly involved in a given production, Maruyama prided himself on doing whatever needed to be done in order to keep a studio moving—from cooking dinner to cleaning the office bathrooms. However, he’s always kept an eye out for new talent, including the likes of Perfect Blue’s Satoshi Kon and Yuri on Ice’s Sayo Yamamoto. Nowadays, Maruyama’s focused on projects that squarely align with his interests such as Nezumikozo Jirokichi or seeing a dream project to the finish line with PLUTO.
