WHAT WE BELIEVE
- Anime fans are the most passionate media consumers in the world.
- Streaming is fine if you want to try something or watch it once, but if you love it, you should own it physically.
- If you buy an artistic work, it should be the highest quality, most complete experience of that work available at the time it was made.
- Animation should be afforded the same respect as film.
- Creator intent, and cultural and historical context are all extremely important to understanding a work.
- All art, even if produced as a commercial product, is self-expression.
- Presenting other people’s art requires the humility to center the work and its ideas, and not your own.
- “World Peace Through Shared Popular Culture”
ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Justin Sevakis grew up obsessed with movies and media, and discovered anime at Blockbuster Video as a teenager. He’s been kicking around the anime industry since 1998, when he founded AnimeNewsNetwork.com the summer he graduated high school. While studying film at New York City’s School of Visual Arts, he got a job at Central Park Media, an early anime distributor, as their in-house video and subtitle editor. Following a stint working in licensing and video engineering at a startup TV network/movie distributor, he returned to AnimeNewsNetwork.com. There he pioneered the site’s early efforts at streaming video, wrote several successful columns (including “Buried Treasure” and “Answerman”), and co-hosted ANNCast, which was the #1 anime podcast worldwide for several years. After becoming sought after for his expertise in DVD and Blu-ray authoring, Justin left ANN to grow his freelance video business into MediaOCD – a full service video post-production company.
As MediaOCD, Justin and his team have since produced nearly 2,000 commercial Blu-rays for nearly a dozen distributors, and overseen marketing for its biggest client, Discotek Media. In 2024, he was approached to take over AnimEigo, the oldest existing anime label in the US, when its founders retired. Deciding to pair it with a sister label for indie film, Whole Grain Pictures, Justin grew MediaOCD into a consumer-facing media publisher and e-commerce storefront. He lives in Los Angeles, where he coaches CrossFit and bakes desserts in his spare time.
